Learning from books - a new approach

Sunday 26 January 2014

As a technical person, I enjoy learning new computer languages, techniques, etc. Whilst setting up WhiteStar Systems it became necessary to re-skill in certain areas. I chose to do this by reading books then trying it out myself, rather than going on stupidly expensive courses.

I have discovered a series of books that work perfectly for me - I have read them and retained much of the knowledge. It is quite amazing. These books are the 'Head First' series by O'Reilly publishing. They are not your run-of-the-mill computer text books. They are designed to help you learn quite technical stuff, but in a way that is fun, easy to digest and which actually sticks in your head.

For example, I had used some HTML/CSS in the past, but never really understood what I was doing. I muddled along with trial and error to get the results that I wanted. Then I read 'Head First HTML With CSS & XHTML'. It suddenly became clear what I needed to do and how it all hung together.

I have now read a number of these and I can honestly say that they have been a revelation. Try them for yourself and let me know what you think.

...Or Why My Website Took Me So Long

I’ve just released my new website (whitestarsystems.co.uk) and I’m very proud of it. But it’s taken me 18 months to create. It’s been a journey. I’d like to share that journey with you here.

I've found a series of technical books that break the mould.

How I got around running a business from a home in a mobile phone dead-spot, without resorting to working from the upstairs toilet!
